2021 primary election: Local races decided in Schuylkill County

There were not many local races Tuesday in the Times News coverage area for borough council, township supervisors or tax collector.

Following is the results for each borough and township in the area.

Tamaqua

In Tamaqua, there were three seats up for election for four-year term and one two-year term for council. The only candidates were on the Republican side.

The top vote-getter for the GOP nod, four-year term, was Kathy Kunkel, who got 412 votes, followed by Mary Linkevich with 360 and Richie Linkhorst with 314. Finishing out of the running were David E. Mace with 283 and Joe Salla 186.

For the two-year term, Jay A. Hollenbach Jr. won over Kunkel. Hollenbach got 347 votes to 276 for Kunkel.

Incumbent Mayor Nathan J. Gerace was unopposed for the GOP nod and got 564 votes. Incumbent tax collector Pamela J. McCullion got 575 Republican votes. There were no Democratic candidates for the two positions.

Coaldale

In Coaldale, incumbent Republican Herb Whildin was unopposed for another term as mayor and got 179 votes. There were no Democrats running.

For council there are three four-year term seats up for election. On the Democratic side Francis J. Hutta got 87 votes and Angela Krapf got 79. They were the only candidates. No Republicans filed. There were 86 write-in votes on the GOP side and 40 for the Democrats.

For tax collector, incumbent Democrat Catherine M. Cathy Papesh got 112 votes. No Republican filed.

New Ringgold

In New Ringgold, Democrat John Belsak was the lone candidate for both parties for mayor and got 11 votes.

For council there were two four-year term seats up for election. Only Republican Ryan Eckert filed and got 30 votes.

Republican Corriann C. Myers was the lone candidate for tax collector and got 35 votes.

New Philadelphia

In New Philadelphia, Democrat Terri Gibbons was the lone candidate for mayor, getting 110 votes.

There are four seats up for election to council, four-year terms, with Democrat Tori Wallace getting 105 votes and Republican John Shamonsky 69 votes. They were the only candidates.

For tax collector, Democrat Robert J. Frantz got 131 votes and was the lone candidate.

Middleport

In Middleport, Democrat Kevin Dempsey was the only candidate for mayor and got 33 votes.

There are three seats on council, four-year terms, up for election. John R. DiFilippo Jr. was the lone Democrat and got 290 votes. On the GOP side Jason Setlock got 44 votes and Wendy Demsey 38.

For tax collector, Democrat Marian Donlin got 36 votes as the only candidate.

McAdoo

In McAdoo there were no candidates for mayor. There were 51 Democratic write-in votes and 117 on the GOP side.

For council there are three seats, four-year terms, up for election. On the Democratic side there were two candidates getting the party nomination - Peter Minneci with 93 and John A. Shigao with 92 votes. On the GOP side, Duane Borchick got 133 and Edward J. Bielen Sr. 126.

For tax collector the Democrats nominated Andrew T. DeBalko with 114 votes, and the Republicans went with William A. Slovik with 104 votes.

Mahanoy City

In Mahanoy City there is one seat on council, a four-year term, up for election in the fall. On the Democratic side Thomas McCabe defeated Scott Kline for the nomination, 198-70. On the GOP side Dennis Weissner was the lone candidate and got 203 votes.

For tax collector, Democrat Teckla McCabe was the lone candidate and got 239 votes.

Rush Township

In Rush Township there was a race for a seat on the board of supervisors, six-year term. No Democrats filed. However, on the GOP side Robert Leibensperger defeated Frederick J. Lahovski Jr., 337 votes to 235.

For tax collector, Republican Michelle Kabilko got 546 votes. There was no Democratic candidate.

West Penn Township

In West Penn Township Republican Tony Prudenti was the lone candidate for a six-year supervisor seat and got 577 votes.

Republican Helene Zeigler was the lone candidate for tax collector and got 821 votes.

There was a race for constable, six-year term, on the GOP side. Jeff Bradford defeated Jack Sarge, 415 to 354. There was no Democratic candidate.

Schuylkill Township

There was a race for the GOP nomination for supervisor, six-year term, with Gary T. Feathers defeating Frank Fabrizio, 171 to 59. There was no Democratic candidate.

For tax collector, Republican Paul Delpais was the lone candidate and got 222 votes.

Edward J. Pollack got the Democratic nod for constable with 80 votes. There was no GOP candidate.

Walker Township

In Walker Township there were no candidates for the office of supervisor, six-year term. There were 98 Republican write-in votes and 12 on the Democratic side.

Republican Diane Yvonne Malay got 206 votes for tax collector. There was no Democratic candidate.

Kline Township

In Kline Township there was a race for the GOP nomination for supervisor, six-year term, with Anthony Vigna getting 198 votes and 111 for Michael Koshmieder. There was no Democratic candidate.

For tax collector, Republican Stephen J. Sheer got 266 votes with no Democratic candidate.

There is a constable position available but no one filed. There were seven Democratic write-ins and 38 Republican.

Delano Township

In Delano Township, Democrat Justin Morczka was the lone candidate for a six-year term for supervisor and got 37 votes.

Republican Patrick Ryan got 40 votes for tax collector and was the only candidate on the ballot.

Blythe Township

In Blythe Township, Democrat Adam J. Nothstein got 72 votes for supervisor, six-year term. No Republican filed.

No one filed for a four-year term as tax collector. There were 19 Democratic write-in votes and 18 for the GOP.
