Few voting problems reported in Schuylkill

Schuylkill County Elections Director Albert Gricoski said there were few problems this morning when voters cast their ballots.

Some of the machines jammed but were quickly fixed.

Register of Wills Theresa Santai-Gaffney voted early in Friedensburg.

She said there was “no waiting” but a steady flow of voters.

“I think people are excited to get out and vote and due their civic duty,” Santai-Gaffney said.

The Common Pleas Judges race has experienced candidates, she said.

Common Pleas Judge Christina Hale and attorneys Christopher Hobbs, James Conville and Julie Werdt have each cross filed for the two seats. Judge Cyrus Palmer Dolbin, who decided to not seek re-election, and Hale’s seat, which was held by the retirement of Judge John Domalakes, are up for election.

“They’ve all worked hard. They are all good candidates. They are all good candidates. It will be interesting,” Santai-Gaffney said.

Howard Merrick, chairman of the Schuylkill County Republican Committee, said voters told him they made a mistake by not turning over for the four ballot questions.

“That’s a worry,” he said.

Gricoski said poll workers were reminded at training to tell voters to turn the ballot over for the questions. He was at the Schuylkill Transportation System building in the Saint Clair Industrial Park for the pre canvassing of the mail-in/absentee ballots, which started at 1 p.m. He did not have a tally for number of votes opened thus far. Voters should know Tuesday or Wednesday morning results of the mail-in/absentee ballots. Return deadline is 8 p.m.

In all, 5,887 ballots were sent out and 4,731 returned to date.

“Thing are going fairly smooth,” he said.
