2021 primary election: Races exist in Summit Hill and Lansford
Four different races in Summit Hill Borough and a Democratic challenge for the nomination for mayor in Lansford highlight municipality balloting in the Panther Valley area on primary election day on Tuesday.
In Summit Hill, two Democrats are seeking their party’s nominations for four-year terms as mayor and tax collector, five Democrats are running for four nominations for three four-year terms on the borough council, and three of those five Democrats are seeking one nomination that is open for a two-year term on the council.
The Lansford race has two people seeking the Democratic nomination to run against the lone Republican who is seeking the four-year term as mayor.
There are no contested races in Nesquehoning Borough.
Summit Hill
Seeking the Democratic nomination for mayor in Summit Hill are Kevin M. Steber and Jeffrey J. Szczecina, while aspiring to the become tax collector are Lacey Gonzalez and Nathan R. Halenar. There are no Republican candidates for either position.
In the race for the three nominations for four-year terms on the council, the candidates are Joseph F. Weber, William J. O’Gurek Jr., Michael L. Alabovitz and Todd Konstas.
Alabovitz, Weber and O’Gurek are also seeking the nomination for a two-year term on the council that is available. There are no Republican candidates for borough council.
Meanwhile, five people are seeking four-year terms as poll officials, including Democrats Sheryl A. Radocha and Barbara Shelton, judge of elections and inspector of elections, respectively, both in the First Ward, and Joseph J. O’Gurek and Aurelia DeMatto, judge of elections and inspector of elections, respectively, in the Second Ward; and Republican Harmony Smith, who is seeking the inspector of elections position in the First Ward.
No one is running for a six-year term as constable in Summit Hill, nor four-year positions as judges of elections and inspector of elections in both the Third Ward and in the White Bear District.
Lansford
The race for the Democratic nomination for mayor of Lansford is between Hugh Vrablic and Joseph Butrie. The winner will square off with Republican Michele R. Bartek, who is unopposed on that side of the ballot.
There is a shortage of candidates for three four-year terms on the borough council that are to be filled. Only Democrat Jennifer M. Staines and Republican Gwyneth Brimmer-Collevechio are seeking their respective parties’ nominations.
Democrat Terrance P. McCall is unopposed on both sides of the ballot for the four-year term as tax collector.
There is only one other candidate on the Lansford ballots. He is Jesse Durning, a Democrat seeking his party’s nomination for a four-year term as judge of elections in the West District.
No one is running in Lansford for the six-year term as constable nor for four-year terms as judge of elections and inspector of elections in the East and Middle districts or the inspector of elections position in the West District.
Nesquehoning
Five candidates who appear on the Nesquehoning Borough ballot are all unopposed.
They include Republican Thomas Jeremy Kattner, who is seeking his party’s nomination for a four-year term as mayor, and Democrats Mary A. Fox and Rosemary Porembo, who are seeking two of the three nominations for four-year terms on the borough council. The trio has no opposition from the opposite sides of the ballots.
That’s not the case for the four-year term as tax collector. Democrat Patricia R. Vito and Republican Karen Sweeney are unopposed for their parties’ nominations this time around but they will square off in the general election.
There are no candidates in Nesquehoning for the six-year term as constable nor judges of elections and inspectors of elections positions, all four-year terms, in both the East and West districts of the town.
