Schuylkill commissioners OK demolition contracts

Schuylkill County Commissioners last week approved nine demolition contracts for blighted properties in Palo Alto, Port Carbon, Shenandoah and St. Clair.

Schuylkill County Commissioner George Halcovage Jr. thanked the legislative delegation for their help in securing money for projects.

Act 152 money, which is a fee assessed for each deed and mortgage recorded, will pay for the demolition of buildings at 311 Broad St., 102-104 Cherry St., and 212 N. Second St. in St. Clair and 254 E. Bacon St. in Palo Alto. Money from Act 152 goes toward a county demolition fund to demolish blighted properties.

MEI Demo & Excavation was awarded two $8,000 contracts one for 311 Broad St. and one at 212 N Second St., St. Clair. Affordable Construction and Demolition was awarded a $13,000 contract for 102-104 Cherry St., St. Clair.

State grant money the county received previously will go to fund the projects in Palo Alto, Port Carbon and Shenandoah.

In Palo Alto, Northeast industrial Services was awarded a $26,428 contract for 420 W. Bacon St., MEI Demo & Excavation a $10,000 contract for 254 E. Bacon St.

In Port Carbon, MEI Demo & Excavation Inc. an $8,000 to contract for 106 Market St., Affordable Construction and Demolition a $9,800 contract for 318 N. Coal St., and Northeast Industrial Services a $38,302 contract for 203 Jackson St.

In Shenandoah, AMC Enterprise a $46,444 contract for 527-529 W. Arlington St.
