Family names ‘Beth Doe’s’ baby

The family of Evelyn Colon, who was known as Beth Doe for so many years, has named her unborn child.

“In light of this Easter season, God has brought so many shrouded mysteries to light that have been entombed in darkness for 45 years. As Christ was resurrected from the grave, justice and identity for Beth Doe have been resurrected. She has a name. Her name is Evelyn Colon. Baby Jane Doe has a name. Her name is Emily Grace Colon,” the family wrote in a message through a GoFundMe account set up by her family.

Nearly 45 years after Colon’s dismembered body was dumped along the highway in East Side Borough, police identified her as Evelyn Colon, 15, of Jersey City, New Jersey. Police were able to identify her through DNA samples after her family saw social media posts and came forward.

One count of homicide was filed against a suspect Wednesday. Luis Sierra, 63, is charged in the killing. He is in New York awaiting extradition. He was Colon’s boyfriend.

While the family can’t comment on specifics because of the ongoing police investigation, Miriam Colon-Veltman said, “We are overwhelmed by the goodness in the hearts of so many people in the midst of this tragedy. We are touched by the outpouring of love and interest in our Evelyn and her family.”

They described her as a mommy’s girl and said they never stopped looking for her.

“She was our hazel green-eyed beauty. She was the young girl next door in downtown Jersey City, New Jersey. Her family loved her. Her family missed her … We are grief-stricken that our search ended this way.”

The family has set up a GoFundMe to gather relatives from around the country to provide a proper memorial for Evelyn and baby Emily Grace.

As of Friday morning, $1,696 has been raised of $15,000 goal.

Currently, Evelyn and Emily are buried in the county cemetery off Laurytown Road near Weatherly. The grave is marked by a white cross.
