Bringing Easter joy for the children in Weissport
It was the best weather possible Saturday as members of the Weissport Borough Council and their families held a Bunny Parade through the community, passing out bags of goodies to the youngsters.
Mayor Paulette Watson drove the police car in front, followed by an ATV driven by Councilman Thomas Ketchledge pulling a decorated cart with the gift bags.
The Easter Bunny (Police Chief Matthew Williams) walked along the route, passing out the gift bags, assisted by borough secretary Jennifer Ketchledge.
Watson said, “about two weeks earlier, Chief Williams went through town and handed out flyers to let the people know the date and time. I heard from some of the parents who said the kids were excited and looking forward to the parade, remembering how well the Christmas parade was that we held.
“It’s something that we wanted to do to give back to the community,” Watson said. “We are excited about it, and the Easter Bunny is excited about it, too.”
The Easter Bunny handed out the gift bags, each containing a stuffed animal, chocolate, lollipops, cookies, Pixy Stix, Rice Krispie treats, plastic eggs with fruit snacks, and other treats. Private donations came from Chantilly Goods, and from Weissport solicitor Gregory Mousseau, Williams, Watson and Jennifer Ketchledge.
The parade wound its way around the streets of town before ending at the borough park. The children were invited to stop by the park and receive a ticket good for a free slice of pizza and a soda donated by Mario’s and even get a photo with the Easter Bunny.
This past December, the borough hosted a similar parade for Christmas. It was so well-received that they decided to hold one for Easter. The borough council took on the project after the Weissport Recreation Committee disbanded. Council members felt it was very important for the local children, especially after the tough year, dealing with the pandemic and cancellation of so many other activities.
Thomas Ketchledge said they plan to eventually create a nonprofit committee so they can continue to hold these types of events for the residents of Weissport. One such possible event would be a community festival to be held in the borough park.
