Monroe couple loses $8,500 in a phone bail scam

An elderly Monroe County couple are the victims of a phone scam that cost them over $8,000.

State police at Fern Ridge said on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. the couple, ages 86 and 82, from Jackson Township, received a call from a William Davis, who represented himself as a defense attorney from Brooklyn, New York.

He told the couple their grandson was arrested in New York and suggested they post his bail, $8,500. Arrangements were made to meet with a courier associated with AAA Bail Bonds.

The man arrived at the meeting location and identified himself as Robert Gomez. He was described by the victims as being a Hispanic male, with dark hair and black eyes, 5 feet 8 inches to 9 inches tall with average build. He was driving a black SUV.

The couple gave the man the cash and he left.

The victims eventually spoke with their grandson and determined they were the victims of a scam.
