Driver cited after Ryan crash

State police at Frackville reported two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash that occurred about 12:22 a.m. on Feb. 25 along Route 54 near the Dollar General in Ryan Township, Schuylkill County.

Troopers said Thomas J. Kehl, 30, of Mahanoy City, was driving a 1994 Toyota Corolla eastbound and negotiating a left curve when he lost control. His vehicle entered the westbound lane and into the path of a 2017 Freightliner tractor operated by Daniel A. Whitenight, 57, of Tamaqua. The Corolla collided head-on into the truck.

Kehl had to be extricated from his vehicle by Ryan Township Fire Company volunteers. It took about 15 minutes to extract him.

He was transported to the Hometown Farmers Market where he was flown by medical helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, with non-life threatening injuries.

Delano Fire Company and Hometown Fire Company assisted at the scene.

Hometown also handled the LZ assignment.

Whitenight was also injured and taken to St. Luke’s Miners Hospital-Coaldale. Both vehicles had to be towed.

Kehl was cited for careless driving.

Route 54 was closed for about one hour.
