Nathan R. Halenar, a lifelong resident of Summit Hill, has announced his candidacy for tax collector in the Borough of Summit Hill. He is seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination in the May 18 primary.
He is a son of Robert and Elizabeth Halenar of Summit Hill.
Halenar graduated in 2007 from Marian Catholic High School, and in 2011 from Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in secondary education. He earned a Master of Science in educational technology from Wilkes University in 2017.
Halenar is a business education teacher in the Tamaqua Area School District and previously taught for nine years in the Pottsville Area School District.
He is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of the Panther Valley, Summit Hill, where he has been a fundraising volunteer. He is president of the Parish Pastoral Council, a lector, Eucharistic Minister, sings in the choir and is a member of the Parish Finance Council and Parish Festival Committee.
Halenar belongs to the Summit Hill Lions Club; Sons of the American Legion, Post 316; Diligence Fire Company No. 1, where he is a member of the fundraising committee; and the Summit Hill Memorial Day Parade Committee.
He is a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association and a member of the Nittany Lion Club, State College Quarterback Club and Penn State Hoopster Boosters. He has served on the Penn State-Hazleton Alumni Society board since 2012.
Halenar is the current president of the Friends of Lansford Recreation, the organization working to reopen the Lansford Swimming Pool.
Halenar said, “Throughout my life, being an active resident in our community has defined me. In my quest to serve my fellow Summit Hill community members, I feel as though my candidacy offers me an exciting opportunity to give back to the place which has brought so much meaning to me as an individual. It is my desire to work as hard as I am able if I am indeed successful, by conducting myself worthily in this elected office for the betterment of our borough and all of its residents.”
