State police report on recent crashes

State police at Fern Ridge reported on the following crashes investigated by troopers:

• A one-vehicle crash was reported at 10:49 a.m. on Jan. 30 along Route 534 in Penn Forest Township, Carbon County. Troopers said Nazareth J. Sowells, 18, of Albrightsville, was driving a 2004 Mazda 3 eastbound and attempted to negotiate a left curve. Trooper said he was going too fast for conditions. The car crossed the center line and entered the westbound lane then onto the berm where it struck an embankment. The vehicle came to rest in the westbound lane.

Sowells was not injured but the vehicle had to be towed.

• A two-vehicle crash occurred at 2:31 p.m. on Jan. 23 along Route 715 in Jackson Township, Monroe County. Troopers said Nicole L. Furey, 37, of Albrightsville, was driving a 2018 Nissan Rogue northbound and struck the rear of a 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 truck driven by Mauro P. Cuesta, 48, of Staten Island, New York.

No one was injured. Furey was cited for following too closely.

State police at Stroudsburg reported on the following crashes investigated by troopers on Monroe County roadway:

• A hit-and-run was reported at 4:54 p.m. on Jan. 28 along Rimrock Drive in Hamilton Township. Troopers said Linda D. Gerkensmeyer, 73, of Tannersville, was stopped on Rimrock, at the intersection with Route 209, behind another vehicle. Troopers said the driver of the other vehicle backed up and struck the front of Gerkensmeyer’s 2012 Ford Focus, then fled the scene. No one was injured.

• A crash was reported at 4:22 p.m. on Jan. 27 along Interstate 80 in East Stroudsburg. Troopers said Brian P. Finnerty, 19, of Bushkill, and Ozzie L. Smith, 44, of Wilmington, Delaware, were westbound with Finnerty in the left lane and Smith in the right lane. Finnerty merged into the right lane behind Smith and was unable to slow down. The front of his 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer struck the rear of the trailer section of Smith’s 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

No one was injured. Finnerty was cited for driving a vehicle at a unsafe speed.
