There were no power outages in Carbon or Monroe counties as of early this morning, even as the storm proved challenging for crews.

As of 9 a.m., Mark Nalesnik, Carbon County Emergency Management Agency coordinator, things were going well, all things considered.

“No significant incidents, no widespread power outage which is my biggest concern,” Nalesnik said. “But road conditions are not good right now; not because of PennDOT.

“It’s very difficult to keep up with this storm. They’re out there, borough crews and PennDOT, and to keep up with a storm like this is very challenging because of the high winds and low temperatures.”

At around that same time, Maryellen Keegan, director of emergency management for Monroe County, said that for the most part, things had been quiet.

“Everyone’s behaving themselves,” Keegan said, adding they had received Tier 4 restrictions from PennDOT about an hour ago (8 a.m.) including Interstate 80 from 81 to the New Jersey border in both directions; the entirety of Route 33, and the entirety of Route 380.

Keegan noted there are currently three municipalities - Delaware Water Gap Borough, Stroudsburg Borough and Hamilton Township - with snow emergency declarations in effect currently.

“The biggest ask for our folks here in Monroe County is to just stay home if you can,” she said. “PennDOT, and roads crews in general, they’ve got a large list over the next day or so to get the roads back open and keep open, so by staying home, you’re helping everyone out.”
