Crews rescue boy, 14, in Weissport

A 14-year-old boy was rescued from frigid waters of the Weissport Canal Thursday afternoon.

Lehighton Borough Fire Chief Pat Mriss said the department was dispatched at 4:24 p.m. to the parking lot at the Weissport Canal for a report of a 10-year-old boy that fell in the water and was trapped.

However, Mriss said the boy is actually 14 and from Weissport.

“He was on his unicycle and went on the edge to look at the water and the stone rock wall collapsed,” Mriss said. “It knocked him in the water and landed on his foot, pinning him in the water.”

Mriss said All Points Towing was already on scene and they assisted the fire department with their leverage bars and were able to lift him up from the rock.

“He was standing in the water, wet and cold, when we got there, but he couldn’t get out because of the weight of the wall on his foot,” he said. “He was freed, and walked up the bank on his own power and was treated by Lehighton paramedics.”

Other than being cold, Mriss said the boy said his foot felt fine.

Also assisting at the scene were Lehighton fire police and Lehighton Ambulance.

Mriss said that while the rescue was pretty quick, he recommended others use caution in that area.

“The wall is deteriorating in that area, and lots of people go to visit it,” he said. “But be mindful that events like this could happen with the deteriorating wall.”

Mriss said he’s glad the boy was able to be rescued.

“It could have been a lot worse,” he said. “Fortunately, it was only his foot and he was able to keep most of his body out of the water.”
