Joseph Weber appointed to Summit Hill council

A former member of Summit Hill Borough Council was named to fill a vacancy on the panel Monday.

Joseph Weber, who had previously served on the council for over a decade until 2011, was chosen to fill the seat left empty by the resignation last month of Gregory Kosciolek.

Weber was one of four individuals to apply for the position. He was seated by a 3-2 vote.

In favor were David Wargo, Michael Alabovitz and William O’Gurek.

Also nominated was Amy Gusick. Voting for her were Karen Ruzicka and Debra Ranck.

Council President Michael Kokinda abstained from voting because he is related to Gusick through marriage.

Also applying were Todd Konstas and Dean Strohl Jr.

In his letter of interest for the council position, Weber said of his prior 10 years on the board, seven of them were served as council president.

He said he was “part of the team that approved and oversaw the construction of the borough hall.”

He also volunteered for eight years as a coach and officer of the Summit Hill Little League.

Weber was appointed by Kokinda to serve as the borough’s delegate on the Carbon County Tax Collection Committee. Alabovitz was named alternate delegate.

In other business, borough Secretary-Treasurer Kira Steber will post a notice on Facebook seeking people who are interested in working for the borough on an as-needed basis plowing snow.

Individuals should send a letter of interest to Steber.

It was also noted the borough is still looking to hire additional part-time police officers.

The council voted 6-1 to place Brian Perchalski on the list of part-time employees. Perchalski had sent a letter to the council indicating he is interested in shoveling snow at Ludlow Park, the police station and the fire station.

Two members of the Summit Hill Recreation Commission were reappointed. They are Melissa Crampsie and Michele Midas.

Alabovitz reported there was a potential COVID-19 exposure at the borough hall resulting from protocols not being followed.

Steber was directed to send notices to all department heads indicating rules and regulations regarding COVID-19 protocol will be enforced. This includes the borough hall, public works department, Water Authority office, police department, fire department and even the Recreation Commission.
