Carbon treasurer announces he won’t run for 6th term

Carbon County Treasurer Ronald J. Sheehan has announced that he will not be seeking a sixth term this year, and will retire from public office at the end of his current term.

“It has been an honor to serve the people of Carbon County as an elected officials for the past 20 years,” Sheehan said.

A lifelong resident of Jim Thorpe, Sheehan’s service to Carbon County stretches almost 30 years, serving nearly a decade as the accountant/fiscal deputy in the controller’s office prior to becoming treasurer.

Sheehan was elected to his current position in November 2001 and was re-elected without opposition for an additional four terms.

During his tenure, he used his previous banking experience to negotiate favorable rates on county deposits and reduce or eliminate fees for banking services for all county departments.

He was also instrumental in setting up the collection and disbursement system of the county’s 3% hotel excise tax and the implementation of computerized licensing programs and county financial updates including direct deposit of payroll and pension payments.

While serving as treasurer, Sheehan has managed the depositing and receipting, as well as disbursements of the $62.2 million budget.

As a member of the county retirement board, he oversees an additional $87.9 million.

He also serves as chairman of the County Records Improvement Committee.

Sheehan is no stranger to public service outside of his employment.

He served as president of the County Treasurers’ Association of Pennsylvania in 2012-13 and vice president for two years. He also served as chairman of the nominating committee and oversaw the election and installation of officers for many years. He has chaired, co-chaired and served on committees for four State Conventions of the association and also serves on the education and resolution committees.

Locally, Sheehan has been elected and appointed to a number of positions for the borough of Jim Thorpe, as well as many civic organizations. Most notably, he was the founder of the Carbon County St. Patrick’s Day Parade and served as executive director of the Asa Packer Mansion for 24 years, stepping down in 2020.

Sheehan currently serves as vice chairman of the board of directors for Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank.
