Five people were hurt when the driver of a vehicle traveling on Interstate 80 in Kidder Township fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to crash at 5:44 a.m. Monday.

Transported to the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, were Tissy A. Vettikattil, 31, the driver of the vehicle, and passengers, Jeevan M. Mathew, 32, and a 1-year old girl, all of Garnersville, New York, and Abraham M. Vettikattil, 63, and Mary A. Vettikattil, 61, both of Des Plains, Illinois.

State police at the Fern Ridge barracks said the Lehighton, Lake Harmony and White Haven ambulances responded to the scene and made the transports. Police said the extent of their injuries are unknown.

Police said the crash happened when Tissy Vettikattil fell asleep while driving and the 2019 Ford Explorer went off the right side of the road and crashed down an embankment, overturning before coming to rest.

The driver was cited for careless driving.
