California men face charges in drug operation

A pair of California men have been charged with delivering packages of marijuana to several states, including Pennsylvania, as part of their drug operation.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Patrolman Edward Kubert of the Weatherly Borough Police Department in the case against Alejandro Roman:

At noon Dec. 8, Kubert clocked a white Hyundai Elantra traveling 52 mph in a posted 35 mph zone in the area of Planes Street.

Kubert initiated a traffic stop. Roman, 42, of El Cajon, California, was the driver.

Kubert noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and called for an additional unit.

Weatherly Police Department Sgt. Michael Bogart responded.

Roman admitted he had some marijuana. He pulled out a clear sandwich bag containing a green substance identified as marijuana.

Kubert then asked for ID from the passenger, who provided a New York driver’s license identifying him as Christopher Roman, 23, the co-defendant in this case.

Christopher Roman turned over two black plastic bags of suspected marijuana from a professionally licensed dispensary.

Both were asked if they had a medical marijuana card for Pennsylvania, and they said they did not.

Once out of the vehicle, Bogart searched the vehicle and found a marijuana shake and small buds on the seat and floor. A heavy duty recycled plastic shopping bag was in the middle of the trunk with two priority mailboxes in it, one of which was sealed up, and the other was open.

Bogart asked what was in the boxes, and Alejandro Roman said it was mail. Christopher Roman said it was not his and it was in the car when he rented it.

The boxes contained narcotics so police obtained a search warrant.

Alejandro Roman had a flight stub along with receipts from the United States Post Office that showed that on Dec. 7, three packages were shipped from Los Angeles to New York, and four to Atlantic City.

The flight stub was for Alejandro Roman to fly from LAX to JFK on Dec. 7.

The marijuana that Alejandro Roman handed Kubert weighed 36.5 grams with packaging, and he had also had two Medibles gummy candy with THC; one Stoney Patch Gummy with THC; one Gummi Bears with THC; 1 XO Cannabis liquid THC; whole leaf and rolling papers.

Police recovered 300 individual pre-wrapped marijuana cigars in glass tubing with labels saying medical marijuana, and 409 labels for retailing the marijuana.

The 409 labels were recovered in the same bag as the 36.5 grams of marijuana that Alejandro Roman handed Kubert, and the labels were the same labels on the 300 individual pre-wrapped marijuana cigars in the glass tubing.

Alejandro Roman said that a friend placed the package in the trunk of the vehicle, and that he didn’t know what was in the trunk.

Alejandro Roman faces charges of manufacture, delivery or possession with intent; possession or distribution of small amount of marijuana; use/possession of drug paraphernalia; and maximum speed limits.

He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $200,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Jan. 27 before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. of Weatherly.
