Pa. virus update: 8,703 cases, 220 deaths

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported Wednesday that there were 8,703 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 445,317.

There are 5,561 people hospitalized with COVID-19. Of that number, 1,160 patients are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older.

The trend in the 14-day moving average of number of hospitalized patients per day has increased by nearly 4,300 since the end of September.

Statewide percent positivity for the week of Nov. 27 – Dec. 3 stood at 14.4%.

As of 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, there were 220 new deaths reported for a total of 11,762 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 40,983 resident cases of COVID-19, and 7,585 cases among employees, for a total of 48,568 at 1,363 distinct facilities in 66 counties. Out of the total deaths, 7,215 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

Approximately 16,021 of our total cases are among health care workers.

Locally, Carbon County is reporting 1,777 cases, an increase of 32 since Monday. Four additional deaths are reported, bringing the total to 66.

• In Lehigh County, there are 14,103 cases, an increase of 253. Deaths remain at 409.

• Luzerne County reported 11,931 cases, 184 since Tuesday. Seven more deaths have been reported, which brings the running total to 337.

• Monroe County has 4,264, an increase of 61. One additional death has been reported for a total of 161.

• In Northampton County, there are 11,226 cases, an increase of 266. Two more deaths were reported for a total of 348.

• Schuylkill County has 4,957 cases, an additional 75. Two additional deaths have been reported for a total of 199.
