A New York state resident is facing charges, including assaulting a state trooper, following an incident that occurred on Saturday along Intestate 380 in Tobyhanna Township, Monroe County.
State police at Stroudsburg said a trooper conducted a traffic stop of a 2018 Nissan Altima at 7:46 p.m., just south of the Mount Pocono exit ramp. There were three people in the vehicle. The trooper immediately smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and had the three occupants get out of the car. They all got out and walked towards the state police cruiser.
One, later identified as Tyrius Berete, 21, of Brooklyn, had a satchel in his hand and put it around his neck. During the incident the man pulled a black handgun from the satchel and threw it onto the be rm of the road.
The trooper attempted to take him into custody and he resisted, and a struggle led to the ground alongside the cruiser. Berete attempted to free himself from the trooper and refused to follow commands to stop resisting. The struggle continued up to the passenger side of the Nissan. During the struggle the trooper used his Taser. Berete tried to grabbed the trooper’s Taser and duty belt. He was finally taken into custody.
Berete was charged with aggravated and simple assault, resisting arrest, disarming a law enforcement officer, firearms not to be carried without a license, tampering with evidence, possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was placed in the county prison in Snydersville.
