Schuylkill seeks CARES Act funding for shelters

Two local Schuylkill agencies that help provide shelter to residents could receive funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

They are Schuylkill Women in Crisis and Servants to All. If approved, money will go toward shelter operations and essential services for both organizations. Hazard pay is also included for SWIC. Administration costs, which are limited to 6%, for the program and subrecipients are included.

Commissioners approved a resolution to submit an application to DCED for $55,831 for an Emergency Solutions Grant Code Blue Application Wednesday. Funds for the grant come from the CARES Act that provided for a “supplemental appropriation of Homeless Assistance Grants,” according to information on the county website, co.schuylkill.pa.us.

The CARES Act further provides for “two allocations of homeless assistance funds to prevent, prepare for and respond to coronavirus among individuals and families who are homeless or who are receiving homeless assistance and to support additional homeless assistance and homelessness prevention activities to mitigate the impacts created by coronavirus,” the website says.

The state has received $19,920,655, its first allocation. Of that, DCED has set aside money for emergency shelter for the 2020-21 winter months, according to the website. An amount was not provided.
