Rummage sale raises funds to refurbish chapel

On Sunday, the Sword Tag Society along with Cindy’s Deli co-hosted their second rummage sale at the Normal Square Chapel. The purpose of the event was to clear out space as well as raise funds to refurbish the chapel.

The event included a wide variety of items such as small knickknacks, seasonal decorations, children’s toys, board games, books, CDs, gardening equipment and small appliances.

One customer was Palmerton resident Christine Guerrera. She said she found out about the event while driving through the area and spotting the rummage sale signs on Route 443. She bought a toaster, painting and flower pot for a total cost of $10. Guerrera said the event was “very nice” and that she hoped it continued to go well throughout the day.

Founder and President of the Sword Tag Society Chris Nothstein said the items at the chapel originally accumulated when the Mahoning Township Lions Club hosted flea markets there.

“They had started collecting and doing sales and then it fell off and people just kept unloading things here so it just accumulated. Now it’s come to the point where both groups as well as the Chapel Association, which is a stand-alone organization, said that it’s time to clean it out anyhow.

“The original idea was to just trash it, but one of the girls at Cindy’s Deli had said, ‘What if we tried to sell some of it first?’ so that’s what we’ve been doing.”

All of the money raised at the sales is going toward the Sword Tag Society’s effort to refurbish the chapel. Upon restoring the chapel back to its former glory, the organization plans to establish the building as a headquarters for their group.

Nothstein described the Sword Tag Society as an adventure group specializing in mock medieval combat mixed with fantasy live action role playing.

The group was unofficially started in 1996 as a special interest Venture crew, and it became an official organization in 2013. People ages 12 and up are able to join.

The Sword Tag Society also teaches outdoor skills, practical skills and participates in various community service projects throughout the area. Nothstein said they also give to other local groups such as the Pale Moon Players, Zion Opera Workshop, various Boy Scout troops and the Mahoning Valley Fire Department.

The Sword Tag Society also helps people move and cuts down trees for any donation amount people are willing to provide, which contributes to their fundraising efforts.

Rummage sale co-host and Cindy’s Deli owner Caitlin Moyer was at the event as well.

Moyer said the deli decided to help the Sword Tag Society with the sale because “Cindy’s Deli and the Sword Tag Society have been friends for a really long time and we like to help each other out whenever we can. So when they took on this venture we talked about it and then we decided that we were going to help them to organize and host it.”
