Blue Mountain Resort honors employees for their lifesaving efforts
Blue Mountain Resort recently honored employees for their lifesaving efforts involving a mountain bike guest back in July.
State Rep. Doyle Heffley presented the seven with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in the Summit Lodge Courtyard outside of Slopeside Pub & Grill.
They include Sharon Drummond, Blue Mountain’s Adventure Park manager; Sara Seidel, Slopeside server; Dan Haddon, Slopeside head chef; Michelle Westerman, Slopeside manager; Jim Feeney, Ski Patrol; Susie Molnar, Ski Patrol; and Connor Frey, Slopeside server.
At around 4 p.m. July 12, a 52-year-old male guest, Alex, who was mountain biking at Blue Mountain Resort, went into cardiac arrest just outside Slopeside Pub & Grill.
Moments after his friends requested first aid, Alex stopped breathing, became unresponsive and his heart stopped. The quick actions of nearby employees restarted Alex’s heart and ultimately saved his life.
Drummond, who was managing the nearby Summit Adventure Park responded to the initial call for first aid. Simultaneously two Slopeside employees, Seidel and Frey, responded to Alex as well. These three employees administered CPR to Alex.
Westerman, Slopeside’s restaurant manager, and Haddon, Slopeside’s head chef, quickly responded with an AED and additional first aid equipment. After applying a shock that was advised by the AED, Alex’s heartbeat and breathing resumed.
On duty ski patrollers Feeney and Molnar arrived to help further stabilize Alex with an airway, oxygen and backboard. Alex was urgently loaded and transported to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest and was taken to the cardiac catheterization lab to treat a blockage.
Alex was cleared for release from the hospital eight days after the incident. The next day, he called and spoke with a few employees at Slopeside Pub & Grill to thank them for saving his life.
