Beware of AF Boyer Hardware and Guns Facebook scam

Customers of a Slatington business are asked to beware of a Facebook scam.

The scam was aimed at A.F. Boyer Hardware & Guns in Slatington, according to owner Abel Boyer.

Boyer said that around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, he received his first few messages from several of his customers asking if it was legit if they had won in the shop’s holiday raffle to be the lucky winner of a $500 gift card.

As part of the raffle, he said participants need to go to Facebook to enter, adding that it clearly states the winner will be selected on Thanksgiving Day. Boyer said the account’s name was incorrect that was being sent.

“Luckily, our customers were able to send me what they were sent via Facebook from a fake account,” Boyer said. “The big thing people took away from this is that page messaged hundreds, if not thousands, of people, and then asked them for their credit card information.”

Boyer said he’s appalled that someone would do such a thing.

“My take on this, I’m not sure in this cruel and unusual world that we’re in, I’m not sure who would do something like this to hurt a small business,” he said. “We don’t want any of our customers being hurt, because this was obviously not us.”

This isn’t the first time the business encountered such a scam, said Boyer, who noted that nearly a year ago the business did a Christmas giveaway and the same exact thing happened.

In the meantime, Boyer encouraged people to go onto their Facebook, which has its name clearly spelled out, A F Boyer Hardware & Guns, for a chance to win a $500 gift card to the business.

“We strongly suggest people never give any information whatsoever, credit card, address, unless it’s in person or they know and trust the place,” he said. “I would hate to see anyone get scammed off our fake account.”
