Blue Mountain eliminates Lehighton in volleyball
SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Blue Mountain lived up to its reputation as it defeated Lehighton in their District 11 Class 3A volleyball match.
The Eagles, seeded third in the playoffs, bested the Indians in three games, 25-11, 25-23, 25-14, on Tuesday, though it wasn’t always easy.
Blue Mountain, the Schuylkill League champions with a 13-0 league record, never wavered against Lehighton.
“I told my girls that the team that makes the most mistakes (will lose), and that’s what it came down to,” said Indians coach Jason Green. “That’s what it comes down to. Even that game (the second with Lehighton losing by two) came down to a couple of key mistakes at key times.”
Losing to Blue Mountain, though, is nothing to brood over. In the Schuylkill League, only one team (Jim Thorpe) took the Eagles to five games. Of their 13 wins, eight were by scores of 3-0.
Overall, Blue Mountain is now 16-1, while Lehighton is 9-9. The Tribe went 5-8 in league play.
Lehighton started all three games by taking the lead. They took a 3-0 lead in the first game.
In the second, they tied the score at 22-22, before a couple of kills by hard-hitting senior Myah Conway put it away.
The third game was almost all Blue Mountain, though.
Conway was a big reason for the Indians loss. She had seven aces, five of them in the final game. She also had 11 kills, four digs and one block.
Overall, Blue Mountain had 10 aces, 32 kills and 55 digs.
The Indians held their own at the net with 11 blocks, seven of which came from senior Alexis Solomon. Solomon also had three kills.
Sophomore Mia Snyder had three aces for Lehighton, while teammate Megan Aaron, a junior, had two aces.
Green noted that he has a young team with just three seniors, two juniors and six sophomores.
“Overall, I’m proud of them,” he said. “They’ve been making gradual improvements all season long.”
Eagles coach Nick Marrongelle, in his 10th season at the helm, agreed that the Indians gave his team more of a tussle than anticipated.
“We’re going to have to play better the rest of the way,” he said.
