Two area teams earn top seeds

The postseason has arrived, and several area teams are primed to make a deep run.

Panther Valley’s volleyball and Northwestern’s field hockey teams both earned No. 1 seeds in the upcoming District 11 tournament.

The Panthers, seeking their fifth-straight district title, are the top seed in Class 2A and have a bye into the semis where they will host the winner of No. 4 Allentown Central Catholic and No. 5 Williams Valley on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m.

After claiming their first Colonial League title since 2002 on Saturday, the Tigers will play winner of No. 5 Palmerton and No. 4 Palisades in the Class 1A semis on Nov. 4. The Bombers and Pirates will play Oct. 31 at 1 p.m.

Northwestern is trying to go back-to-back after winning its first district title since 2004 a year ago.

Several area squads are seeded second in the district tournament.

Coming off its second straight Colonial League title, the Northwestern girls soccer team will look to repeat as district champs. The Tigers earned the No. 2 seed in Class 3A and a bye into the semifinals where they will play the winner of No. 3 Southern Lehigh and No. 6 Bangor. The contest is scheduled for Oct. 31 at a site and time to be determined.

Jim Thorpe’s boys soccer team is the No. 2 seed in Class 2A and will play No. 7 Pen Argyl in quarters on Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. at Jim Thorpe.

The Green Knights knocked the Olympians out of the tournament in penalty kicks in the 2A semis last year.

Also in Class 2A, Tamaqua earned the No. 3 seed will play No. 6 Pine Grove in quarters Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. at Tamaqua. Should both the Olympians and Blue Raiders win, they would meet in the semifinals on Oct. 29.

Marian is the No. 2 seed in the Class 1A volleyball bracket and has a bye into the semis where the Fillies will host the winner of No. 3 Minersville and No. 6 Tri-Valley on Oct. 29. The site and time are still to be determined.

The Northwestern boys soccer team fell to Southern Lehigh in penalty kicks in the Colonial League final over the weekend. The Tigers topped the Spartans 1-0 in overtime a year ago on a spectacular bicycle kick by senior Jeff Garcia to win the Class 3A crown.

They will be looking to go on a similar run as the No. 4 seed in the Class 3A tournament when they host No. 5 Bangor in quarters on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m.

In Class 1A, Weatherly is the No. 4 seed and will play No. 1 Moravian Academy in the semis on Oct. 31 at a place and time to be determined.

Pleasant Valley is the No. 5 seed in Class 4A and has a bye into the quarters where the Bears will play No. 4 Freedom, which also had a bye, on Oct. 31 at 10:30 a.m. at Freedom.

On the girls’ side, No. 4 seed Palmerton will host No. 5 Jim Thorpe in the Class 2A quarters on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m.

Tamaqua is the seventh seed and will travel to No. 2 Pine Grove the same day for a 6:30 p.m. quarterfinal match.

Northern Lehigh is the No. 4 seed in Class 1A and will host No. 5 Schuylkill Haven on Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. in the quarters.

In Class 4A, Pleasant Valley is the fourth seed and has a bye into the quarters, where it will host No. 5 Easton, which also had a bye, on Oct. 31 at noon.

The Class 3A volleyball bracket features three area teams, all of which will be in first round action on Oct. 27 at 6 p.m.

Jim Thorpe is the No. 5 seed and will travel to No. 4 Pottsville in the opening round. The winner will play top seed Becahi on Oct. 29.

Lehighton is the No. 6 seed and will travel to No. 3 Blue Mountain, while Northwestern in the seventh seed and will travel to second seed Southern Lehigh on the same day at 6 p.m.

A victory by the Indians and Tigers sets up a meeting between the two programs in the second round on Oct. 29.

In Class 4A, Pleasant Valley is the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Emmaus on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. in the first round.

The Bears are the No. 7 seed in the Class 3A field hockey bracket and will play No. 2 Easton Oct. 29 at 5 p.m.
