Jim Thorpe and Pleasant Valley pick up two victories
Jim Thorpe and Pleasant Valley both picked up a pair of victories on Thursday.
The Olympians wins came in volleyball and girls soccer, while the Bears posted volleyball and field hockey wins.
VOLLEYBALL
Lehighton-Jim Thorpe
Jim Thorpe posted a 25-13, 25-11, 28-26 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.
Brandy Montemuro (11 assists, eight blocks, five kills and four digs) and Andi Hoherchak (nine digs, five blocks, five kills, three assists and two aces) both had strong all-around games for the Olympians. Also playing well for Thorpe were Abigail McGinley (20 digs, three assists) and Kristin Pompa (five kills, three aces, two blocks).
For Lehighton, Alexis Solomon (six blocks, three kills and three digs); Megan Aaron (10 digs, three blocks and two kills); Hailey Miller (18 digs); and Maddie Soffey (five digs, four kills, two blocks) led the way.
Panther Valley-Tamaqua
Panther Valley cruised to a 25-15, 25-10, 25-19 Schuylkill League win over Tamaqua.
Erika Dubosky paced the Panthers’ attack with 13 kills and 10 assists. Natalie White added five aces and four kills, while Abbey Vermillion chipped in with four kills.
Ember Starr led the Blue Raiders with 10 digs and one ace, while Madison Baddick added three kills and three digs, and Leah Mateyak had three kills.
Panther Valley improves to 11-3 overall. Tamaqua slips to 2-18.
Marian-Millersburg
Marian rolled to a 25-21, 25-11, 25-15 Schuylkill League sweep of Millersburg.
Ashlyn Klitsch sparked the Fillies’ offense with 34 assists. Alivia Karchner and Becca Dzuranin led the way at the net with 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Defensively, Tat Zeleniak (11 digs), Klitsch (11 digs) and Karchner (nine digs) all played well.
Marian moves to 10-2 on the season.
Pleasant Valley-ES North
After a slow start, Pleasant Valley rebounded to finish strong and score a 10-25, 10-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-13 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over East Stroudsburg North.
Jackie James had 12 digs, 10 kills and two assists to lead the Bears. Also contributing to the victory were Lexi Womak (11 digs and seven kills); Sophia Tauers (12 assists, four digs, two aces); Andrea Crilley (nine assists, seven kills, two digs) and Sarah Ballek (five kills, four digs, two assists, two blocks).
The Bears move to 2-1 on the season, while ES North falls to 2-6.
FIELD HOCKEY
Palmerton-Northwestern
Brynn Balliet’s fourth-period goal was all Northwestern needed to secure a 1-0 Colonial League win over Palmerton.
With 13:14 left in the contest, the Tigers’ Ali Lister sent Balliet a perfect set-up which Balliet finished in what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
The Tigers (14-4 overall) held a 4-2 edge in shots, while the Bombers (7-6) held a 13-1 advantage in penalty corners.
ES North-Pleasant Valley
Pleasant Valley blanked East Stroudsburg North for a 2-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory.
Matti Hyland and Nikol Smale each had goals for the Bears. Arianna Mulligan was credited with two assists.
Pen Argyl-Northern Lehigh
Pen Argyl handed Northern Lehigh a 1-0 Colonial League setback.
Alyssa Williams recorded the Green Knights’ lone goal.
The Bulldogs drop to 1-10 on the season, while Pen Argyl moves to 1-8.
BOYS SOCCER
Weatherly-Nativity
Nativity doubled up on Weatherly for a 4-2 Schuylkill League victory.
Antonio Colecio posted a first-half goal for the Wreckers (5-8 overall), while Jacob Solonoski added a second-half goal. The Wreckers’ Trevor Lowman finished with two assists.
Frankie Willis made 12 saves in front of the Wreckers’ net.
Pine Grove-Palmerton
Pine Grove defeated Palmerton for a 7-2 non-league win.
The Bombers fall to 0-11 on the season, while the Cardinals move to 6-6-3.

GIRLS SOCCER
Pottsville-Tamaqua
Two second-half goals helped Pottsville pull away for a 4-2 Schuylkill League win over Tamaqua.
Maura Walker and Sophia Boyle recorded the Blue Raiders’ goals, while McKenna Kane finished with an assist.
Grace Evans led the Tide with a goal and two assists.
Blue Raiders’ goalie Zoe Seltzer made nine saves.
Tamaqua slips to 7-9 overall, while Pottsville improves to 11-1.
Jim Thorpe-N. Schuylkill
Nicole Carroll’s two goals led Jim Thorpe to a 4-0 Schuylkill League win over North Schuylkill.
Carroll scored in each half for the Olympians, who earned their 10th win of the season. Lauren LeKites and Lydia Wallace also added second-half goals. Wallace had two assists, while Gabby Cinicola and Heidi Washel also were credited with assists.
Kate Bos made three saves for Jim Thorpe to give the team back-to-back shutouts heading into the playoffs.
Lehighton-Blue Mountain
Blue Mountain recorded a 3-0 Schuylkill League win over Lehighton.
The Indians fall to 3-11 on the season, while Blue Mountain improves to 7-8.
