Towamensing Twp. hears concerns over short-term rentals

Short-term rentals, transient rentals and Airbnbs were the hot topic at Towamensing Township Board of Supervisors’ meeting Thursday night.

“It is something that many municipalities are struggling with, and trying to find a solution,” Supervisor John Kleintop said.

The room only had one empty chair, and when the floor was opened up for questions on the subject of short-term rentals, transient rentals and Airbnbs, only five people were there for other reasons.

“People have been doing it for quite a while, according to the supervisor, but about three months ago, residents really started to have issues with neighbors renting out their homes short-term,” Kleintop said.

One Towamensing resident complained about broken bags of garbage strewn all over the curb across from his house and hearing people in the pool during the night.

Resident after resident stood up with similar stories and pleading the board of supervisors to keep pushing to get an ordinance passed to stop short-term rentals, transient rentals and Airbnbs.

The supervisors plan to have a special meeting to discuss an ordinance.

The ordinance will address permits and require sprinklers, fire escapes, proper garbage removal and designated parking.

In other news, the township set trick-or-treating for 5-7 p.m. Oct. 31.
