Local roundup: Results from Sept. 15
The Tamaqua girls soccer team celebrated Senior Night in style with a convincing Schuylkill League win Tuesday.
Elsewhere, the Panther Valley volleyball team stormed past Pine Grove for a thrilling five-set victory. Marian and Lehighton were also victorious in volleyball action.
The Marian and Palmerton golf teams also earned wins.
GIRLS SOCCER
North Schuylkill-Tamaqua
On Senior Appreciation Night, a trio of Tamaqua upperclassmen helped guide the way in a 6-0 Schuylkill League win over North Schuylkill.
Seniors Sophia Boyle (two goals, three assists), Lexi Thomas (two goals, assist) and Megan Rolko (two goals) sparked the Blue Raiders’ attack.
Tamaqua keeper Zoe Seltzer registered four saves to secure the shutout. Kayla Kristopatias finished with 37 saves for the Spartans.
The Blue Raiders move to 1-1 on the season.
VOLLEYBALL
Pine Grove-Panther Valley
Riley McArdle fired two straight aces and Panther Valley rallied for a 25-22, 23-25, 23-25, 25-22, 16-14 Schuylkill League victory against Pine Grove.
Erika Dubosky powered the Panthers’ attack with 27 kills, eight assists, four digs and three aces. Madison Heckman dished out 24 assists, three kills and three aces, while Alexis Cooper recorded 25 digs and McArdle finished with four aces and three kills before closing out the match.
Karissa Morgan had 34 digs and five aces for the Cardinals, who also got 42 assists from Alera Aungst along with 23 kills and two blocks from Megan Wolfe.
Pine Grove won the JV match, 2-1.
Mahanoy Area-Marian
Marian swept Mahanoy 25-4, 25-10, 25-12 in a Schuylkill League match.
Alivia Karchner had 13 kills, four digs and two aces for the Fillies, while Jami Wheeler added six digs, five aces and three kills. Tatiana Zeleniak had seven digs and two aces.
Lehighton-Tamaqua
Lehighton posted a 25-17, 25-11, 25-14 victory over Tamaqua in a Schuylkill League contest.
Sophia Salerno had nine aces, five kills, three assists and two digs for the Tribe. Maddy Sofranko added six aces, two kills, 13 assists and two digs, while Hailey Miller recorded an ace, five kills, one assist and one dig.
Leah Mateyak had three kills and two digs for the Blue Raiders.
Lehighton also won the JV match, 2-0.
Jim Thorpe-Pottsville
Pottsville handed Jim Thorpe its first loss of the season with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 Schuylkill League win.
Andi Hoherchak paced the Olympians with 22 assists and 12 aces, while Abigail McGinley had 39 digs, and Brandy Montemuro added 12 kills and Kristin Pompa two blocks.
Jim Thorpe falls to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the league.
GOLF
Schuylkill Haven-Marian
Marian picked up its first win of the year, topping Schuylkill Haven 389-418 in a Schuylkill League match.
Carl Moyer paced the Colts with a 90, followed by Walter Pavlik’s 94. Mason Mazurkiwecz also shot under 100, finishing with a 99.
Tyler Barton earned medalist honors for the Hurricanes with an 84.

Three players shot in the 70s to help spark Palmerton to a 388-550 Colonial League win over Pen Argyl.
The Bombers’ Tyler Hager carded medalist honors with a 70, while Dominic Kintz and Josh Suto followed with scores of 74 and 78, respectively.
Jon Dario led the Green Knights with a low score of 74.

Tamaqua-Nativity
Four first half goals helped Nativity secure a 4-1 victory over Tamaqua.
Jonathan Arevalo recorded a hat trick for the Hilltoppers, while Jesus Meza and Ivan Majaraz added scores.
Tyler Steigerwalt posted the Blue Raiders’ only goal, while Mike Shlanta had an assist.
Jon Ulicny and Kevin Bazan split time between the Blue Raiders’ posts. Ulicny grabbed four saves.
N’western-Notre Dame GP
Notre Dame pulled out a 1-0 Colonial League win over Northwestern.
The Crusaders’ John DeMelia scored the game’s lone goal in the first half.
CROSS COUNTRY
Northwestern, Palmerton, So. Lehigh at Catasauqua
The Northwestern boys and girls, along with the Palmerton boys, split in Colonial League action.
Southern Lehigh downed Palmerton and edged Northwestern in the boys meet. The Tigers and Blue Bombers both defeated Catty.
In the girls meet, the Spartans cruised to wins over Palmerton and Northwestern. The Tigers topped Catty, but the Roughies topped the Bombers.
The Tigers’ Angela Klein placed second in the girls race, while teammate Maci Fisher finished ninth. The Bombers’ Natalie Mosier ended 13th.
Sam Bower (third), Cole Chukoskie (fourth) and Matt Santana (fifth) paced the Tigers with top-five finishes, while Palmerton’s Michael Noyola recorded a team-best 12th-place finish.
