Wayward turtle back home in Schuylkill

Chester the tortoise is back home with his family in Orwigsburg after escaping Monday.

The 50- to 60-pound tortoise had a romp about town before borough workers found him Wednesday.

“When we encountered him, he was just chillin’ in the backyard,” Patrolman Robert Bechtel said of the borough owned property on Long Avenue.

He said Orwigsburg Police and even state police in Hamburg were notified of Chester’s disappearance. Bechtel said there were sightings of him at various locations including near M&T Bank on the square. Residents helped Chester cross the street, he said.

“You don’t really imagine tortoises being fast animals,” Bechtel said.

Bechtel and Orwigsburg Police Chief John Koury went to the property after being called by borough workers. Bechtel said the mother of Chester’s owner was nearby and given the animal. Chester lives with his family on West Market Street, Bechtel said. He didn’t appear injured, but perhaps hungry since he was last fed Monday.

Bechtel said Wednesday this was his first experience finding a missing tortoise.

Hayley Katzaman, 17, Chester’s owner, said he escaped around 4 p.m. Monday.

“He moved a giant brick and knocked down a board,” which was against a concrete wall which leads to the street, she said.

She said before they knew it, he escaped, the first time doing so. Family members were inside during the incident.

Katzaman posted on social media about her missing friend she had since he was 3 months old.

“He became the little tortoise who was exploring anywhere he could go,” she said.

Chester lives in the house, but likes the outside. He eats leafy greens, but he also enjoys cat food, something he should not eat.

The area he escaped from will be fixed to prevent another escape.

“He’s grounded,” she said.

Chester has been returned with his family in Orwigsburg after he wandered away earlier this week.
