An elderly Carbon County woman is the victim of a scam that cost her a substantial amount of money.

State police at Lehighton said an 88-year-old woman from Jim Thorpe, Penn Forest Township, reported she sent $55,000 in treasurer’s checks to an unknown solicitor located in Wilmington, Delaware. The victim was promised a large financial reward in exchange for the checks, but did not receive money. Troopers said the incident occurred during the time frame of Aug. 15 to 18.

An investigation is continuing as troopers are attempting to develop a suspect.
