Jim Thorpe mayor seeks input on trick-or-treating

Halloween parades in the area are falling one by one as COVID-19 exposure concerns carry into the fall, but will trick-or-treat nights be next?

Jim Thorpe Borough Mayor Michael Sofranko said Thursday night he’s seeking more input before making a decision.

“I’ve gotten some phone calls on the topic, but we really don’t know what is going to happen yet,” he said. “Everything is changing on a daily basis.”

While the decision is up in the air, Sofranko said he is leaning toward the borough having some type of trick-or-treat event, even if it isn’t in the usual fashion.

“What form it’s going to take, I don’t know yet,” he said. “Some towns are looking at having residents put their candy on a table outside and just having kids come up and take a piece. I don’t know if that would work. There would be one happy kid who was first in line at the table.”

The Sam Miller Field Association has contacted the mayor about hosting a trunk-or-treat at the field in the “Heights” section of the borough as it has in the past.

Many questions remain, but one has been answered. If an official trick-or-treat takes place, it will be on Halloween this year, which is a Saturday.

The borough normally holds its trick-or-treat midweek on the same night as surrounding municipalities to eliminate “town-hopping.”

“Another thing we’re looking at is holding it during the day,” Sofranko said.

“I think it would be safer. Those sightlines crossing the street become difficult at night for kids when you’re wearing a mask.”

Sofranko said he’ll come back to council in October with his recommendations after meeting with more residents on the topic.
