People who rebelliously set off fireworks in Palmerton may have to alter their plans.
From this day forward, fireworks are banned in the borough between the late evening and morning hours.
Borough council on a 5-0 vote Thursday adopted a fireworks ordinance that states people aren’t allowed to discharge fireworks in the borough between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. Councilmen Kris Hoffner and Michael Ballard were absent.
Not only does the ordinance limit fireworks; it also makes it clear that they cannot be discharged on borough property.
According to Pennsylvania state law, fireworks are banned from being ignited within 150 feet of an occupied structure, even if no one is present at the time.
It isn’t just Palmerton that’s had to deal with the widespread issue.
Earlier this month, Slatington Borough Council adopted an ordinance, which bans setting off consumer grade fireworks between the hours of 9 p.m. and 9 a.m., unless a special permit has been sought for an event.
Slatington’s ordinance also bans the use of consumer fireworks on all borough property including parks, buildings, other structures, streets, sidewalks and rights of way, unless a special permit is secured.
Also earlier this month, Lehighton Borough Council agreed to send revisions for its current fireworks ordinance to its borough solicitor for proper verbiage.
From that point, an updated ordinance will be drafted and presented to council for approval. A petition with about 35 signatures was previously presented to the borough.
