Lehighton Band to hold outdoor concert Aug. 20
The Lehighton Band plans to hold an outdoor concert later this month.
“Oh, The Places You’ll Go” is the theme for the band’s concert that was originally scheduled for the spring but will instead be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Lehighton Amphitheater.
The band has been practicing outdoors and abiding by social distancing guidelines. Not all the band’s members have returned to practice, but the band has a nice instrumentation, and the concert is certain to be enjoyed by all.
A social distancing plan has been presented to the borough for use of the park, as audience members are asked to wear masks when it is not possible to keep a safe social distance from others in attendance. Those who are able are asked to bring lawn chairs which can be set up in the upper section of the amphitheater, and the newly renovated tiered section of the park where there are no benches. There are benches available to those who cannot bring a chair, but visitors are asked to skip benches to create social distancing.
The theme of the concert was taken from the title of the Dr. Seuss book of the same name, and the “destination” concert will feature songs from many places that people will enjoy traveling to once the pandemic is over. In the meantime, the band hopes the music from these places can take the audience on a virtual vacation.
As usual, the band will open with “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The band will then travel west to Indiana and present the “Indiana State Band March” by O.R. Ferrar, which will be followed by a trip to Minnesota while the band plays “Eagle Bend Overture” by James Barnes.
The band will then play the beautiful arrangement of “America, the Beautiful” arranged by Carmen Dragon. The trip then heads to Tennessee while the band plays “Tennessee Salute” which includes “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Wabash Cannonball,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and the “Tennessee Waltz.”
The band will then make a quick excursion to the West Coast and will play Alfred Reed’s version of “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” While out west, the band will play “Big Bands Go Western” which includes “On the Lone Prairie,” “Streets of Laredo” and “Home on the Range.”
In a whirlwind trip, the band flies back east and back in time to New York to perform “New York 1927” which is a musical “painting” of what life in New York was like in 1927 with the hustle and bustle of traffic and crowds. As long as the band is time traveling, it will then transport into the future and take the audience into outer space for “The Guardians of the Galaxy.” This piece is from the Marvel Studio’s movie of the same name and includes Marvel Studio’s “Fanfare,” “Hooked on a Feeling,” “Come and Get Your Love,” “Groot Cocoon,” “Cherry Bomb” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”
The band then heads to “Covington Square” in a song by James Swearingen. Although there are places called Covington Square, the song is not specifically about one of these but rather a majestic feeling of an imaginary place. The concert will then transport the audience to France when it performs “Midnight in Paris,” arranged by David Bennett.
A Mexican trip will be the next destination while the band plays “Mexican Overture” by Merle J. Isaac, which includes recognizable tunes from Mexico. The Caribbean is the next stop with Disney Pictures’ music from “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” with music from Hans Zimmer arranged by Jay Bocook.
The destination is Ireland and the woodwind section in particular is challenged with Leroy Anderson’s “The Irish Washerwoman” from the “Irish Suite.” And just like that, the Lehighton Band will be back home in the Lehighton Amphitheater playing John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
The concert is free to the public. Since the band has faced financial strain due to the pandemic and the loss of all picnics and outings, any donations would be greatly appreciated.
The band is under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley.
