L. Towamensing supervisors hear concerns
Lower Towamensing supervisors on Tuesday heard several concerns from residents.
Steve and Steff Saas of Little Gap Road have a problem with sewage. They said it is coming up from their neighbor’s septic tank and overwhelmed drain field, and is spreading into their yard. It has been going on for more than a year and they first told the township about it last summer.
The problem is scheduled to be heard by a magistrate judge in mid-September, but the smell is unbearable. They wanted to know if the township could make the neighbor do more than have their septic tank pumped out each month, or get the hearing moved up.
“We have been very patient with this process,” Steff Saas said.
She explained that the sewage enforcement officer for the township has tested the seepage twice, and it was positive for E. coli. They are concerned about the health risks of E. coli, and are upset about not being able to enjoy their yard and pool.
“Due to the overwhelming smell of raw sewage, we cannot spend any significant time outside,” she said.
Saas continued, “Our grandchildren cannot play in our yard - absolutely not. We have difficulty mowing our grass. (The mower became stuck in the sewage.) Our dog, Rosie, cannot play in our yard, because she runs into the area, her paws are covered in human feces.”
She said she and her husband do not have any animosity toward their neighbor. They just want the situation remedied.
“Now that it’s in the court system, the magistrate controls what goes on,” Supervisors’ Chairman Brent Green said.
He said the township can give the magistrate the pictures and statement from the couple, as well as a letter from the SEO about recent conditions, but there isn’t anything else they can do.
Not water related, but still a concern brought up by a resident is the faded lines on the roadway. Ralph Cortazzo of Carpenter Lane said the double yellow lines on the main roads are hard to see.
“I think it’s presenting a hazard, especially at night,” he said. “I’d like to see those lines repainted.”
Township secretary Christine Wentz said it is on the schedule for the second week of September to have the lines repainted on most of the main roads.
