Coaldale Council

Coaldale Council on Tuesday night addressed the following:

Streets

• Council Member Ken Hankey Jr. expressed concern about dumping on Ruddle Street and said there may be pipes under Ridge and Ruddle. Vice President Claire Remington and Council member Wayne Figner requested proof of the presence of the pipes, but Hankey said he was not sure on how to provide that. He said it is something to keep in mind because if there are pipes, there could be a major water issue for residents in the area. The board decided they would try to look into it but Figner said if there’s no proof, it’s just hearsay and he isn’t sure what they could do with that.

• A motion was carried to rename the Anthracite Street area of Coaldale to Anthracite Avenue.

Solicitor Robert Yurchak handed out copies of the water drilling ordinance to all board members. The new ordinance states that Coaldale residents will not be able to drill their own wells. At their last meeting, Coaldale members of the council said it would be dangerous to have anyone drilling into the ground with the history of mining and all of the material still in the ground.

Trailer complaints

• Remington said there have been numerous complaints about the trailers that are being parked around Coaldale and left there. She suggested there be an ordinance made prohibiting the parking of nonmotorized vehicles unless they are attached to a motorized vehicle. The reasoning for that, she said, is because anybody from another state can come drop off and park their trailer for free. She specifically mentioned that this has been happening near the post office where parking is limited.

“We don’t want them cluttering our streets,” Remington said. “The post office is only open 12 to 2 Monday through Friday and there’s no parking spots anywhere, but it’s everywhere in town.”

Remington asked the board to consider using Ridge Terrace Field to rent out to people so it fixes the parking issue as well as bring the town a little bit of cash.

Solicitor Yurchak said he’d look into creating the ordinance while the board agreed to keep the idea of using Ridge Terrace Field in consideration.

Figner said Pappy’s is another place people can park their vehicles for a fee.

Other business

• Board President Angela Krapf informed the room that Coaldale had been getting help in getting residents to pay delinquent taxes, and said that they have been successful. Remington said the extra money has been helping the town to pay the bills.

Town bills were voted to pay when funds were available.

• The complex has voted to advertise leasing of the complex. Coaldale has been made an offer for it from someone who would like to put upscale apartments in but Remington and Figner said they’d like to keep it open for recreation purposes. Figner said he’s opposed to the idea of apartments entirely but Remington said the board should keep their options open because the building needs to be taken over by winter so someone can pay to heat it.

• President Krapf said she thought the town should look into buying speakers for their desks so residents can hear them during town meetings. Residents often report having trouble hearing, not only because of the setup of the room, but now because of the required masks.

The board liked the idea and Krapf said she’d look into the pricing as soon as possible.
