Man shot after firing at police Slatington police stop suspect after cigar store incident
A Slatington man who was wanted in connection with an attempted homicide in the Lehigh Valley Friday was shot by police Saturday morning following a standoff in the borough.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Cpl. William Rowan and Detective James Bruchak of the Pennsylvania State Police - Troop M, Belfast/Lehigh County Detectives in the case against Adam Zaborowski:
At 9:35 a.m. an officer from Slatington, as well as two state troopers from Bethlehem attempted to make a traffic stop at the intersection of East Washington and Second streets in Slatington. None of the officers were identified by troopers.
The vehicle, driven by Zaborowski, 35, stopped at the intersection and Zaborowski immediately got out of his truck and started firing at the Slatington Police Department marked vehicle which contained an officer as well as marked State Police vehicles and responding troopers inside the state police vehicles.
Zaborowski fired several rounds in an attempt to strike the responding officers. As a result, the Slatington Police Department and troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police returned gunfire with Zaborowski, subsequently striking him.
He was taken into custody by the Pennsylvania State Police and Slatington Police Department.
He was treated at the scene by Northern Valley EMS and transported to the Slatington Airport, where he was flown to St. Luke’s University Hospital Bethlehem Campus. State police said he was alert and conscious. He is expected to survive.
The Slatington officer was shot in the arm, but it was minor. Both troopers were unharmed. It was noted Zaborowski had an AK-47 and a pistol.
Lehigh County Special Operations and the Slatington Borough Fire Department assisted crews at the scene. Pennsylvania State Police and detectives from the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Officer are investigating.
Two witnesses who initially contacted Lehigh County 911 Center reported knowing that Zaborowski was wanted by law enforcement authorities in Northampton County.
The witnesses reported seeing Zaborowski making several trips from the apartment building where he lives to a blue pickup later identified as a 2008 Blue Dodge Dakota. They watched Zaborowski take a rifle and several containers that appeared to be military ammunition cans from the apartment building and place them in the aforementioned pickup truck. The neighbors called 911 to report what they were seeing. While doing so, Zaborowski left the apartment area in the blue pickup.
Zaborowski had an active warrant for his arrest from the Bethlehem Township Police in connection with a shooting at Cigars International on Friday after he shot at the clerk after being asked to wear a mask while shopping at the cigar shop.
In that incident, he is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery and reckless endangerment.
With regards to the Saturday shootout, Zaborowski faces charges on seven counts each of criminal homicide; murder of a law enforcement officer of the first degree and aggravated assault; and one charge of persons not to possess/use/manufacture, control, sell, transfer firearms.
According to The Associated Press, defense attorney John Waldron said Zaborowski’s father told him that Zaborowski had lost his job due to the pandemic and had recently lost custody of his child, which could provide some insight into his actions.
“He just wasn’t dealing well with the loss of his job, the loss of his child, just not handling the pandemic well,” Waldron said. “I think he was getting stretched too tight.”
Waldron, who represented Zaborowski in the past, added from what he knew of the allegations, “this is not his typical behavior pattern.”
Zaborowski’s criminal history which revealed on Dec. 19, 2002, he was adjudicated of aggravated assault, which prohibits him from possessing firearms.
He was arraigned Saturday evening, with bail being set at $1 million.
Zaborowski is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Aug. 10 in Central Court at the Lehigh County Courthouse.
