In the July 10 article “Concerns raised over Redneck Festival,” it was reported that a council member voiced concerns about the potential of rioters.
Given the national conversation, it is disturbing and sad that no one raised concerns about how flying and selling Confederate flags would be appalling and hurtful/painful to many residents of Carbon County.
This is a point in history when we get to decide. “Tradition” is a cover story for our very long history of violence and discrimination against African Americans. The Confederate flag is a symbol of that history.
The Redneck Festival can still be a day of fun, music, games and food. The presence of this symbol only ruins that for many people, residents who would otherwise attend.
When interviewed by John DeBella, Jeff Foxworthy was asked, “How do you feel about the Confederate flag coming down?” The comedian who made redneck humor famous replied, “Well, it was probably time, don’t ya think? I mean it’s kinda like the swastika, it wasn’t a real good image.”
