A look back: July 22, 1957

State Police Sgt. Frank Cannon, a Summit Hill native now assigned to the Hazleton detail, will be honored tonight at the American Legion home in Hazleton.

The fete, sponsored by the Larry O’Rourke Memorial Lodge No. 38, Fraternal Order of Police, is honoring Cannon for winning the State Police pistol shooting championship for the fourth consecutive year. He won the 1957 title last month by scoring 496 out of a possible 500 points.

Among those scheduled to offer remarks at the event are Capt. Lawrence Sapudar, commanding offices at Hazleton; Lt. Joseph F. McElvaine and John “Ike” Bonner, Summit Hill, former Carbon County state assemblyman.
