Man who tried to hit pedestrians, lied about ID is in custody

An Albrightsville man who had been charged in Nesquehoning for trying to hit two people with his vehicle and leading a police officer on a chase before crashing into a creek last year has been taken into custody.

Nesquehoning Police Chief Sean Smith said that Justin William Cannon, 28, of Wylie Circle, was arrested by Franklin Township police on July 9 after he lied about his identity repeatedly when speaking with the officer.

According to the most recent incident, Cannon appeared to be under the influence of narcotics.

It is noted that Cannon was also on probation.

Cannon had been charged in March with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer; four counts of simple assault; two counts of recklessly endangering another person; driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of a controlled substance; failing to yield at posted stop signs; careless driving and reckless driving, for the incident in Nesquehoning on Nov. 8.

During the incident, police said Cannon tried to strike two pedestrians multiple times who were out walking their dog in New Columbus.

When police arrived, he led the officer on a chase down West Columbus Avenue before hitting and embanking and going airborne into a creek.

Cannon was found unconscious in the vehicle and had a head injury. He was flown to St. Luke’s University Hospital Bethlehem Campus for treatment and a toxicology test.

Toxicology results later came back positive for fentanyl and midazolam, as well as a blood alcohol concentration of 0.176.

He was arraigned on July 9 by District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford and sent to Carbon County Correctional Facility after failing to post $50,000 10 percent bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 22.
