Safer Streets to host annual event Saturday

Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet will host its Overdose Awareness Candlelight Walk and Festival on Saturday.

The fifth annual event will be held at the Owl Creek Reservoir from noon-6 p.m. with the Candlelight Walk starting at 5 p.m. There will be two sessions of naloxone training at both 1 and 2 p.m.

“We’re very fortunate to be able to have this event,” said Tammy Sienkiewicz of Safer Streets. “So many people that are in recovery reached out to us and said we need this event right now, people that haven’t been able to give back to their community.”

Admission to the event is free. There will be children’s games, free popcorn and snow cones for kids and other food available for purchase. Free backpacks will be given to children.

Lisa Scheller will speak at 2:30 p.m. Music entertainment will be provided by Drive Train. The band will play from noon to 4 p.m.

The event is a good source of learning for all, as there will be preventive education and resource material available.

Social distancing and face coverings will be encouraged as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

“It’s a very positive day. We’ll be able to remember our loved ones that left too soon. We can’t stop talking about substance-use disorder. Once you stop talking about it, that’s when the problems begin all over again. And that’s why we remember those we lost. The other thing, this event shows you’re not alone.

“So many of us were alone before Safer Streets in Tamaqua.”
