Mahanoy’s Karnish fires no-hitter
Mahanoy City combined a no-hit pitching performance from Lucas Karnish, along with a barrage of hits from its offense, to deal an 18-0 loss to West Penn Township on Thursday evening.
Mahanoy City fired a quick torpedo to the bow of the Mustangs’ ship, scoring nine times in the first inning, which was more than enough to start sinking the boat.
It also helped Karnish, who was spot-on throughout the four-inning contest. Karnish struck four batters and walked three.
He retired the side in order in the first and fourth innings, giving up his first walk in the second, and a pair in the third.
Meanwhile, the Maroons pounded out 14 hits, including two doubles and a triple. Portside hitting Billy Mayberry had a big evening with five runs batted in, including a bases-clearing triple in the first inning, along with a two-run double in the second. Dylan Davidson was right behind Mayberry with a double, single and three RBI; Jace Yedsena collected two hits with an RBI; and Karnish helped his cause with a pair of singles and two RBI.
Also, Tanner Zawada poked out a pair of singles, Brady Alansky, the slick fielding shortstop, drove in two runners with a single, while Levi Terry, D.J. Nunamacher and Sean Payton all had singles and RBI.
The nine-run first-inning uprising by the visitors turned into an 11-0 lead in the second, while the Maroons added a two spot in the third, before scoring six more runs in the fourth.
THROWING STRIKES ... Karnish had an impressive pitch count, throwing just 67 total pitches in the four innings, with 51 of those being in the strike zone.
