Carbon County court — drug cases

Four defendants in drug-related pending cases entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Monday.

Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted pleas from the following:

Christopher P. Scott,

27, of Albrightsville, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. In exchange for the plea, a charge of possession of a controlled substance was dropped by the district attorney’s office.

He was arrested on April 11 at Franklin Avenue and Green Street in Palmerton. Police had responded to the area for a disturbance and found Scott and methamphetamine.

Scott’s plea was done by video conference from the Monroe County prison in Snydersville, where he is being held on other charges.

Matika placed him on probation for six months, concurrent with a six-month probation period imposed on him by Matika on June 15 when he entered a guilty plea to accidents involving damage to a vehicle or property. He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment and render 25 hours of community service when paroled.

Justice Elijah Malik Batts,

22, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana. Two counts of possession of a controlled substance were dropped in a plea deal.

He was arrested on Nov. 20, 2019, following a vehicle stop along Interstate 80 in East Side Borough by state police at Fern Ridge. Xanax was found in the vehicle.

He was sentenced to serve three to six days in jail, given credit for six days already served, and paroled.

Gregory James Derr,

58, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was arrested on Feb. 11 by state police at Lehighton along Route 209 in Franklin Township following a traffic stop.

Matika imposed a fine of $150.

Monte Tashaw Newton,

25, of Kunkletown, pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was arrested on July 25, 2019, by state police at Lehighton following a traffic stop along Little Gap Road in Towamensing Township.

He was fined $150.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and those on probation pay a $50 per month supervision fee.
