Slatington to purchase camera system for police car

On Monday, the Slatington Borough Council held their monthly meeting at the Vigilant Fire Company.

A motion was made to approve the purchase of an in-car camera system for one of the Slatington police cars. The budgeted price of this new addition will cost a total of $3,455.75. Although not a mandatory upgrade, police Chief David Rachman stated that it will serve as a replacement for the previous police camera that failed over a year ago.

“The more documentation we get, the better. The DA’s office likes to see as much video as they can.”

An update was given regarding the fireworks ordinance put in place last year. The ordinance bans firework usage between the hours of 9 p.m. until 9 a.m. without a special events permit. On the Fourth of July, 10 reports were called in to the police department, and several violators were properly cited and are continuing to be cited as needed.

Rachman said, “People are calling us and saying there’s fireworks going off. We know that too, we can see them all over the place. By the time you get there, if the people aren’t there physically lighting the fireworks we still have to follow the rules as far as citing.”

He ended the discussion by reaffirming the benefits of the ordinance and confirming improvements from last year saying, “The ordinance is a good thing.”

Lastly, Rachman publicly thanked the Slatington community for the kindness that many have shown the police department amid the global protests the past couple of months.

“We’ve had people dropping off baked goods and baskets. We’ve gotten cards in the mail and friendly waves from people. I just wanted to say publicly, on behalf of the police department, we certainly appreciate the pat on the back. It’s not an easy time for anybody, especially in our profession.”
