A one-vehicle crash was reported at 1:51 p.m. Sunday along Interstate 81 in Kline Township. Troopers said Juan-Carlos Martinez-Galeano, 37, of Gilberton, was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer southbound in the left lane when he lost control of the vehicle.
Martinez-Galeano applied the brakes hard, skidded off the left side of the road, spinning 90 degrees counterclockwise during the skid. The front of the car struck an embankment, then rolled over. While it rolled over the car hit and knocked down a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation road sign. The vehicle came to final rest on its roof in the southbound passing lane.
Once emergency personnel arrived Martinez-Galeano and his passenger, a 12-year-old boy, also from Gilberton, fled the scene. They were later picked up by a passing motorist and taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital Pottsville Campus. Martinez-Galeano was cited, troopers added.
