A suspect in four armed robberies in Schuylkill County, and possibly more in Berks County, was caught Tuesday following a high speed chase that ended when his vehicle crashed into a state police cruiser.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been released by troopers, was taken into custody along Panther Valley Road, near Cressona, at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed his vehicle into a state police cruiser near Wilder Street.
A robbery was committed Monday at the U.S. Gas Station in Strausstown, Berks County. Troopers believe the suspect in custody was responsible for that robbery and four that occurred in Schuylkill County over the past weekend.
The first robbery in Schuylkill County occurred at the Mobil Gas Station in Cressona borough at 9:15 p.m. Saturday. The second occurred at 6:10 a.m. Sunday at the Speedway Gas Station in Pine Grove Township and in less than an hour a third occurred at the Auburn Food Mart in West Brunswick Township. Troopers added the fourth occurred on Sunday at the Vista Fuel, located along Route 61 in Schuylkill Haven. Schuylkill Haven police are investigating that robbery. Troopers did not release any information on the amount of money stolen in the robberies.
In each case a white man entered the businesses brandishing a black handgun and demanding money.
Troopers are also investigating whether the suspect was responsible for two armed robberies last week in Schuylkill Couny. One occurred at the Unimart Exxon in West Mahanoy Township on April 20 and the other at the Turkey Hill Mini Mart in Lavelle, Butler Township, on April 21.
No one was injured in any of the robberies.
