One New York state resident was killed and two others seriously injured when their vehicle crashed along Interstate 80 in Pocono Township, Monroe County, at 4:17 p.m. on Sunday.
State police at Stroudsburg said Keith T. Johnson, 26, of Jamaica, was driving a 2014 Ford Escape eastbound in the right lane while attempting to pass another vehicle, which was in the left lane. Johnson began increasing his speed in the right hand lane when he lost control. The Escape slid off the road into a ditch. It slid sideways in the ditch and then began to roll over counterclockwise and struck several trees. The Escape came to rest against a tree.
Rescue personnel had to use mechanical means to extricate Johnson from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Rescue personnel had to extricate two passengers, Rashawn J. Vailes, 23, and Stephan A. Vailes, 21, both of Roosevelt. Both were taken to the Lehigh Valley Pocono-Monroe, in East Stroudsburg, for treatment of suspected serious injuries.
Traffic was restricted on I-80 while police investigated.
