A home was ravaged by a fast-moving fire early Friday morning in East Penn Township.
The two-alarm fire was reported at around 1 a.m. at a single-family home with an attached garage at 2019 Sand Quarry Road, according to township Assistant Fire Chief Brenden McArdle.
McArdle said that upon arrival, firefighters encountered a fully involved building with flames coming through the roof.
“It was difficult, because the roof had collapsed, the first floor had burned through as well, and the other problem was the high winds,” McArdle said. “We were able to hold the fire to the house, there was a lot of fire damage in the garage; an outbuilding, we were able to protect that, as well as their two cars we were able to protect.”
Township fire Chief Robert Kleintop said a man and his dog were evacuated from the home.
Kleintop said the man, along with his mother who came to the scene, were taken to the hospital and have since been released.
McArdle said it took firefighters well over an hour to knock the fire down.
Kleintop said the cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation by a state police fire marshal.
He said firefighters remained on scene for about 4½ hours.
McArdle said Mahoning Valley Fire Department, West Penn Fire Department, Lehighton Fire Department, Bowmanstown Fire Department, Parryville Fire Department, and Aquashicola Fire Department, along with Lehighton Ambulance, and Mahoning Valley Ambulance for its rehab unit, also assisted at the scene.
“The wind was a complicating factor, it was fully involved, kind of a losing battle,” he said. “I think there was a quick response from all the departments, there were no injuries to any firefighters, no loss of life.”
Michele Baehr, executive director for the American Red Cross of the Pocono Mountains, said the organization is ready to respond when the resident becomes available.
