A look back: April 7, 1964

Weissport council rescinded its action of March 11 and voted last evening against the purchase of a 4-mile stretch of the Lehigh Canal in the Weissport area.

The council voted last month to buy that section of land from the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company at a price of $8,500.

The action came after the council was presented a petition signed by protestors of the action, who claimed the purchase would be an additional expenditure which would mean higher taxes, in addition to there being an ongoing constant expenses should the canal be developed as a recreational area.

Councilmen Herman Kernis, Warren Walck, David Whiteman and Marvin Reich voted in favor of the motion to not buy the land. Albert Lichty voted no and Jacob Paperman was absent.
