West End news for March 18, 2020
Cancellation notice
Effort UMC has advised the community that worship services at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday, are canceled due to COVID-19.
All other church activities and groups are canceled until March 31. Further re-evaluation will be made as the situation develops.
The lasagna dinner on April 3 has been revamped. There will be no dining in for this event; preorders for pans of homemade lasagna (feeding a family of four) will be taken through April 1 by emailing or calling the church office, with the dinner not including salad or bread.
Call the church for payment information.
Pickup at the church is set for between noon and 2 p.m. April 4.
The Mission Outreach Auction set for April 4 has been postponed.
Easter flower orders must be into the church by March 30.

Bingo canceled
Bingo at the Chestnuthill Park slated for Friday is canceled.
Free dinner scrubbed
The free community dinner at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville has been canceled.
Worship services for the coming weekend are also not taking place in light of the virus situation.
No Senior Centers
All of the Monroe County Senior Centers, including the Chestnuthill Senior Center at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville, are closed until at least March 30.
If you have a senior you know who participates there, remind the individual of that.
Eldred Supervisors
The Eldred Township Board of Supervisors is having its meeting tonight as scheduled. The board is looking into developing a plan for remote participation in the April meeting if necessary. That could allow the supervisors and the public to exchange information and comments and conduct business as usual if needed.
Physical presence could be allowed if one is not able to remote view, and this is only in the event of extreme measures due to COVID-19.
Anyone choosing to come to this board meeting should not if they have any symptoms or a respiratory illness. People attending should use the hand sanitizer provided and not sit close to anyone, making sure there is a minimum of 3 feet between people.
The meeting area will be sanitized the best as can be.
The Planning Commission meeting for Thursday has been canceled.
The next meeting of that body will be at 7 p.m. April 16.
Legion programs
Anyone interested in any of the meetings and programs at the American Legion Post 927 for the upcoming days can call the Legion at 610-681-5838 for more information.
The scheduled Finnegan’s Wake set for March 28 has already been canceled.
Doors closed
The Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville, has closed its doors to the public, but online services are still available.

Tax help on hold
West Enders going for help with their taxes from AARP tax volunteers at Salem United Church of Christ, corner of Long Mountain Road and Route 209, Gilbert, must wait a while to get that help.
The program is on hold until further notice.
Musical postponed
Dan and Marci Mulligan have announced that due to the directive from Gov. Tom Wolf, the March 27, 28 and 29 production of the Pleasant Valley High School musical “South Pacific” is postponed indefinitely.
It is the Mulligans’ intention to still perform this production some time before the end of this school year for the sake of the students and the community if the green light is given to proceed.
Purse bingo
The upcoming purse bingo set for Saturday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church has been postponed, for now, until April 18.

PVEN has needs
The Operations Manager’s report for February indicate that the PVEN’s client roster and needs are growing.
Last February, 36 families were helped with clothing, but this year it was 51 families, including 162 individuals, that came for aid.
In regard to the food program, this year 295 families, consisting of 902 family members, sought help whereas last year it was 277 families.
Current needs for those families include personal care products, linens and bath towels, and clothing, especially the larger sizes for men and women’s large underwear.
In the food department, current needs include child friendly meal options, cans with pop tops, breakfast items, etc.
Lioness Club postpones
Due to circumstances, the Western Pocono Lioness Club will not be meeting in March, but hopes to do so in April.
Polk Supervisors
The next meeting of the Polk Township Board of Supervisors is slated for 7 p.m. Monday at the municipal building in Kresgeville.

WE Republicans
The next meeting of the West End Republicans, set for Tuesday, has been canceled.
The group’s next planned meeting is Tuesday, April 28, at 7 p.m., at Cherry’s Restaurant in Kresgeville.
Blood drives set
According to a representative at American Red Cross Blood Services the blood drive at Cornerstone Community Church on Polk Township Road in Kresgeville is still happening March 26.
The drive is scheduled for 1 to 6 p.m. and both blood and Power Red are being accepted.
A nearby drive to the West End, in Blakeslee at the Community Center on the corner of Routes 115 and 940, is also still on the calendar
That drive is set for noon to 5 p.m. Only blood will be accepted.
Rain barrel sale
The Monroe County Conservation District is now accepting orders for rain barrels through April 8. Pickup of ordered rain barrels will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 25, at the Monroe County Earth Day celebration, to be held at the Monroe Campus of Northampton County Community College in Tannersville.
Each barrel is made in Pennsylvania from recycled 58-gallon olive barrels, with brass fittings and an easy open screened lid. Barrels do not need to be hard fit and are easy to install.

Conservation Camp
The Monroe County Conservation District is currently accepting applications for the 44th Monroe County Conservation Camp, held at Stony Acres Wildlife Sanctuary/Recreational Facility. Conservation Camp is a residential camp for teens ages 14 through this year’s high school graduate being held from July 18 through July 25.
