The home of the United Steelworkers Union Local 3317 which handles union workers for the Zinc Corporation of America in Palmerton has been put up for sale because of the dwindling number of union members.
According to local President David Semmel, the building, which has housed the union for 234 years, was placed on the market block in February.
He said the number of union members dropped from 405 in December to about 300 following recent layoffs. Before 1980, there were nearly 1,250 union members.
The building is used to hold monthly meetings, sign contracts and other union activities while serving retirees, beneficiaries and current union members.
