Emergency crews are on scene of a train derailment along the Mermon Street crossing in Nesquehoning.
The incident happened just after 3 p.m. on Sunday as the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad freight train passed through the intersection, which sits right above Panther Valley Elementary School and is the road that leads to New Columbus.
According to reports on the scene, the derailment started occurring several blocks away as the freight passed through the town. A total of six cars derails, leaving broken track thrown in some areas like sticks and car wheels sitting next to the track instead of on it.

New Columbus, Hauto and Nesquehoning fire companies, as well as Carbon County Emergency Management Agency, Nesquehoning Police and railroad officials and police were on scene to assess the damage and determine how to begin removing the cars that were blocking the roadway.
Panther Valley Elementary School posted on its Facebook page that the school will be closed tomorrow as a result of the derailment.
In addition, all students from other buildings that get the bus from New Columbus or at the elementary school will not be provided transportation tomorrow.
